Who's Running the Show?
Reclaim the creative control and strategic vision your life's been missing
What the heck is a showrunner?
Perhaps the job title showrunner is new to you – but you've probably heard someone (maybe your dad, a friend, or your neighbor, Steve) defer a decision by bantering, "Ask my wife, she runs the show around here." Rather than taking agency himself, this guy has handed the reins over. She's in charge of their decisions, their time, their purchases, their household… their life.
In the world of TV, we call this "person who's in charge of everything" the showrunner. It's a multifaceted role that requires the soul of an artist, the clarity of a strategist, and the drive of an entrepreneur.
As both head writer and executive producer, the showrunner wields the most creative control while managing the logistical aspects of production. They must orchestrate every detail – balancing vision with execution, heart with hustle – to ensure the show's excellence. It's one of the most pivotal and sought-after roles in the industry.
So… who's showrunning your life?
Who (or what) is playing the most pivotal role in your very existence?
Does fear have creative control over your dreams – keeping you small, playing it safe? Or is it perfectionism that keeps you blocked? Maybe it's a pessimistic family member who told you you were "too much", or an industry of gatekeepers that says you're "not enough".
What about the logistics? The budget? The day-to-day operations? Who's calling the shots when it comes to your finances, career, relationships, health, spirituality, and – most importantly – your time?
Is comparison running the show – all your friends doing more, making more? Is it self-sabotage or an abusive boss convincing you that you're not deserving of a raise, a break, or a life you actually enjoy?
Or perhaps an entire industry has created a slew of limiting beliefs about your worth, your potential, or your freedom to pursue other opportunities.
I ask these questions not to send you into a shame spiral, but to bring awareness. Because you, my friend, are the most qualified person to showrun your life.
You know yourself better than anyone – your dreams and desires, your authentic character and values, your resources and capabilities, who you are and who you're becoming. You must use that information to lead, produce, and create the best version of your show (aka: your life) season after season.
Showrun Your Life
By the time I realized I was chasing after an outdated dream, my self-worth was in shambles. Writing had gone from joy-inducing to anxiety-provoking, and I found myself pigeon-holed in a declining industry with little room for growth or apprenticeship. I felt hopeless, stupid, stuck.
I had been so focused on my path to becoming a showrunner, that I stopped showrunning my life.
Which is unfortunate – because the only thing worth spending that amount of time, energy, and passion on is your own damn life.
Showrunning your life means taking responsibility for the direction your life is moving. If your show isn't turning out the way you want it to, you have to reestablish your vision – then set clear, achievable goals to turn that vision into reality.
This includes examining the departments of your life—not just your career, but also your health, relationships, finances, personal-development, creativity, and joy. The categories that get overlooked when we're overly focused on success.
Imagine a TV show with great writing but mediocre acting. Or one that blew its entire budget on a stunning location, leaving nothing for wardrobe or sound. The show would suffer.
That's because every department contributes to the show's overall excellence. A great showrunner budgets wisely, hires top-notch department heads, and ensures that every aspect of the show aligns with their vision. Without that alignment, the show falls apart.
Same goes for your life.
No matter how inspiring your ambition, how impressive your resume, or how successful your career looks from the outside – if you don't have time or energy left in your budget for what matters, your life will feel subpar. It won't function the way it's meant to. It won't feel like you. And the final product? It won't match the original vision.
So… what departments in your life need a bigger slice of your budget? Where is your untapped potential quietly leaking energy from the show and costing it its excellence?
Adopting the leadership mentality of a showrunner changes everything. It gives you the confidence to make clear decisions, manage unexpected chaos with grace, and keep the show moving with consistent daily action.
Say it with me now:
I am the showrunner of my life.
I am the showrunner of my life!
I AM THE SHOWRUNNER OF MY OWN DAMN LIFE!!!
Sounds silly? Maybe. But neuroscience backs it up. Agency is powerful. Simply acknowledging your own authority can quite literally rewire your brain, helping you shift out of survival mode and into creative momentum. When you believe you're in charge, new neural pathways form, making it easier to spot opportunities, make aligned decisions, and take consistent action toward the future you actually want.
When you fully embrace the Showrun Your Life philosophy, everything shifts. You stop waiting for permission. You stop clinging to versions of success – or versions of yourself – that you've outgrown
This mindset can empower you to pivot from outdated dreams or finally pursue the ones you've feared. It can guide you out of debt or help you save for something extraordinary. It can motivate you to prioritize your health or learn a new skill – or heck, a new language. It can even give you the confidence to leave a toxic job or walk away from a relationship that drains you… so you can make space for what truly fills you up.
Showrunning your life is powerful. It reminds you that you're not just along for the ride. You're in charge – of your dreams, your direction, your entire story.
You don't need permission. You don't have to wait for the next season.
The life you want begins the moment you promote yourself to showrunner.
